Cambridge Huskies
With the completion of the Cambridge Ice Arena, the Huskies became a formal team and entered the BUIHA league in non-checking division 3 South. At the beginning of the 2019/2020 season, it was decided that the Huskies would be a purely developmental team for both genders, with more experienced players joining the Women’s Blues, regardless of gender. For the purposes of the league, this led to essentially an ‘A’ and a ‘B’ team.
The Huskies were formed in early 2018, leading up to the annual varsity matches. This allowed players who were ineligible to play in the Women’s Blues game to still compete. In the 2018/2019 season, the Huskies played as a recreational team, made up of development male players and any new recruits who were not experienced enough to join the Women’s Blues. They played in rec games against a Peterborough rec team and a developmental team from the University of Nottingham. Prior to the formation of the Huskies, male development players joined the Women’s Blues.
The Huskies team in its current form is a great way for players new to ice hockey to gain experience and compete in a lower division, using it as a springboard to potentially join the other Cambridge Ice Hockey teams that play in higher divisions.
Cambridge Narwhals
The Cambridge Eskimos, the University’s ‘B’ team, were originally formed in the 1920’s along with the Oxford Cosmopolitans. However, during World War II the rivalry was suspended, and upon its return the Eskimos were no longer a feature. The team was revived again in 1995 and represented the ‘recreational’ side of the club, welcoming both beginner players from the University, members of staff and also one or two players from outside. Despite the recreational status, in recent years the squad has featured some formidable players and has taken on some very strong opposition from both University teams and recreational teams across the country.
After much discussion, the recreational league team has decided to rename themselves The Narwhals. As of 2021 the Narwhals have become independent from the University club. Check out their website for more information.
